7 Big Reasons Your Body Needs Long-Term Health Liposomal Glutathione

If you are over 30 years old and have only had to choose a dietary supplement in the past, it is advisable to consider liposomal glutathione. Glutathione is one of the best universal supplements for managing the biochemical stress of life, and its liposomal form (or in some cases the S-acetyl form) is the most bioavailable because it allows the body to absorb what you take.

It consists of three amino acids: L-Glutamine, L-Cysteine and L-Glycine, glutathione is a sulfur-containing molecule of an antioxidant and nutrient produced in each cell of the human body. It is found in higher concentrations in the liver, eyes, spleen, pancreas and kidneys, while it is mainly used in the brain and liver to capture oxidants responsible for cell damage and inflammation.

Glutathione is the only protective antioxidant produced by and is therefore the most important because it protects cells from oxidative stress caused by free radicals. It protects sensitive DNA from damage, while helping to bind heavy metals, remove toxins and strengthen immune function; it is also particularly useful in viral infections, as you will see when I turn to the S-acetyl form of glutathione. Glutathione is mainly used in the brain and liver to capture oxidants responsible for cell damage and inflammation. It is useful for the support of the brain and neurological functions and for the detoxification and elimination of certain heavy metals.

If you often experience symptoms of brain fog, memory and/or concentration problems, a glutathione preparation is sufficient. In the same way, inflammatory diseases, including arthritis and asthma, react well to glutathione. As an antioxidant, this treatment is beneficial for general health and disease prevention.

Glutathione has many important functions:

Unfortunately, our body’s capacity for glutathione decreases at the age of. Chronic disease and prolonged toxic exposure can not only break down glutathione but also inhibit its production. Although glutathione is the body’s main antioxidant and detoxifier, this attribution is not able to treat a wide range of diseases that glutathione can improve. Clinically, glutathione plays an important role in the treatment of diseases ranging from mental health to viral infections and heavy metal detoxification.

Here are seven major health benefits of adding glutathione.

1. Reduces mercury and cellular toxicity

Glutathione is essential for cell detoxification. The detoxification process in Phase II binds toxins to substances such as glutathione to form larger, inactive, water-soluble molecules. Toxins such as mercury bind to glutathione, are removed from the stools of the cell, bile and body. Glutathione is therefore necessary both to protect the cell’s sensitive chemical equipment and to eliminate toxins. Because glutathione is used to remove mercury and other toxins from the cell, it can be depleted under toxic conditions. [3]

2. Reduces oxidative stress

Oxidative stress occurs when there is an imbalance between the production of free radicals and the body’s ability to neutralize them. Increased oxidative stress can be a warning for many diseases, including diabetes, cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. Glutathione helps prevent exposure to oxidative stress, which can reduce the incidence of free radical damage.

An article in Cancer Science and Therapy states that glutathione deficiency leads to increased oxidative stress, which can lead to cancer. It also indicates that high levels of glutathione have increased antioxidant levels and resistance to oxidative stress in cancer cells.

3. Improves insulin sensitivity and diabetes

Insulin resistance occurs when muscle, fat and liver cells react badly to insulin and cannot use blood glucose for energy. To compensate for this, the pancreas releases more insulin. Over time, blood sugar levels rise because insulin is not enough to transport glucose from the blood to the cells that use it for energy. This can lead to type 2 diabetes.

A small study conducted in 2018 showed that people with insulin resistance tend to have lower glutathione levels, especially if they have had complications such as neuropathy or retinopathy. The 2013 study confirmed this.

As you will see below, our body produces less glutathione with age. Researchers at Baylor Medical School used a combination of animal and human studies to investigate the role of glutathione in weight management and insulin resistance in the elderly. They found that a low glutathione value was associated with a lower value of burned fat and a higher value of body fat. Older subjects were added to the diet with cysteine and glycine (two amino acids) to increase glutathione levels, which increased over a two-week period, improving insulin resistance and fat burning.

Prolonged hyperglycemia is associated with a reduction in glutathione, leading to oxidative stress and tissue damage. A study published in the Diabetes Journal found that dietary supplements containing cysteine and glycine increased glutathione levels. It has also reduced oxidative stress and damage in people with uncontrolled diabetes, despite its high sugar content.

4. Reduces cell damage from alcoholic and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

Cell death in the liver can be exacerbated by a lack of antioxidants, including glutathione. This can lead to fatty liver disease in both alcoholics and non-drinkers. Hepatitis, alcohol abuse and fatty liver disease are harmful to liver cells.

A small clinical study conducted in 2017 concluded that glutathione may help in the treatment of non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases because of its antioxidant properties and detoxification potential.

The researchers note that larger studies are needed to confirm this effect.

Glutathione has been shown to improve protein, enzyme and bilirubin levels in people with chronic alcoholic and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Another study from 2017 showed that oral administration of glutathione had a positive effect in people with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease after a proactive lifestyle change. In this case, glutathione was administered as an additive at a dose of 300 milligrams per day for four months.

As early as 1995, a study showed that glutathione was more effective in people who had received a high dose of liver fat by intravenous injection. Study participants also showed a decrease in malondialdehyde, a marker of liver cell damage. As you will learn below, the liposomal form of glutathione is as effective as intravenous administration.

5. Increases mobility of people with peripheral vascular disease

Peripheral vascular disease occurs when the peripheral arteries are blocked by plaque. It’s mostly in the legs. In one study the participants were divided into two groups: those who received glutathione and those who received a placebo twice a day for five days. Their mobility was then assessed. As a result, the glutathione group improved blood circulation and was able to walk longer distances without pain than before the introduction of glutathione.

6. Reduces symptoms of Parkinson’s disease

Parkinson’s disease affects the central nervous system and is determined by symptoms such as tremor. He doesn’t have a cure yet. A 2002 study documented the positive effects of intravenous glutathione on symptoms such as tremor and stiffness. Although more research is needed, this case shows that glutathione can help reduce symptoms and improve the quality of life of people with Parkinson’s disease.

7. May contribute to the fight against autoimmune diseases.

Chronic inflammations caused by autoimmune diseases can increase oxidative stress. These diseases include rheumatoid arthritis, celiac disease and lupus. As the graph above shows, the amount of glutathione produced by our body decreases rapidly from the age of 30. At the same time, and partly due to the reduced protection of glutathione, the oxidative stress we experience increases as glutathione levels decrease. Shortly after the age of 60, oxidative stress levels are higher than glutathione levels.

This reduction in glutathione occurs naturally when it is not supported by additives, but various lifestyle factors can reduce it more quickly, for example:

The latest addition to glutathione offered by ProHealth is the improved S-acetyl glutathione Emothion®. I’ll do that in a minute, but first some background on this other form of glutathione.

S-acetyl glutathione is a form of glutathione that optimizes absorption, bioavailability and antiviral properties, for example to combat type 1 herpes simplex (HSV-1).

This glutathione acetylated form occurs when an acetyl group in a glutathione molecule is bound to a cysteine (amino acid) sulfur atom. To understand what an acetyl group is, it is necessary to pass a few chemical tests, but it suffices to say that when it is bound to cysteine, the molecule is protected against oxidation in the gastrointestinal tract and there is no unwanted smell or taste of sulfur atoms.

S-acetyl glutathione is ideal for oral administration because this acetyl group protects glutathione from gastrointestinal damage; after absorption and in the cells it is eliminated, leaving the glutathione molecule intact.

S-acetyl glutathione is also ideal for viral diseases and for more intensive therapy when higher doses are recommended. Not only has it been shown to be stable in the gastrointestinal tract, but it also has a longer plasma half-life with a better ability to penetrate cells and increase intercellular glutathione levels more effectively. One study demonstrated the advantage of S-acetyl glutathione over (non-liposomal) glutathione in increasing intracellular glutathione levels, both in vivo (whole living organism) and in vitro (outside a living organism, in a test tube or petri dish). According to this study, a viral infection in cell culture resulted in a significant decrease in intracellular glutathione levels. S-acetyl glutathione restores intracellular glutathione in an effective and dosable way.

The conclusion was that S-acetyl glutathione complements glutathione levels in the body more effectively than regular glutathione supplements and therefore prefers glutathione supplements when a person needs to quickly increase glutathione levels and when higher doses may be desirable.

The same study showed that S-acetylglutathione has antiviral properties when used in cellular and animal models of herpes simplex type 1 (HSV-1) infection by inhibiting viral replication and improving survival better than ordinary glutathione.
